With the finest types of oud.. This is how Eid is received in the Gulf

Perfume is among the ancient customs of the Arab Gulf countries, which they inherited from their ancestors, un til today it has become a heritage.

Gulf people are keen to have the finest types of perfume in their homes. Rather, Gulf cities erect monuments to incense burners and perfume sprayers. To indicate the inherited popular interest in perfumes.

Houses in the Gulf countries alike are not devoid of perfumes that are burned in special pots called "incense burners" and "chimneys", in addition to the fact that the Gulf people are interested in perfuming their homes continuously, but this increases on occasions.

The most important of these perfumes is the Oud, which is considered the most expensive type of perfume, in addition to the multiplicity of its types, which the higher the quality, the more expensive the price.

The oud, which reflected the social status of the host in the past, has been closely linked to Gulf hospitality, and over time has become associated with many occasions of sadness and joy.

Therefore, wherever you go in any of the Arab Gulf countries, you must find the scent of oud; It is considered one of the main symbols in the Gulf culture, as it was sung by poets and formed the beginning of several poems.

Gulf people spend large amounts of money on "oud", which indicates the transformation of the Arabian Gulf region into a large, important and active market for "oud" and various types of perfumes.

- What is Oud?

Agarwood is a fungus that infects trees, producing a pleasant smell. Several trees are cut down to get the infected tree, which explains its high price. This is because most trees are cut down before they have a chance to become infected with the fungus.

As for the extraction of oil, it takes place after crushing the stick pieces into small pieces, where the pieces and crumbs resulting from the cleaning process are used, not the large pieces, then soaked in water and left for a while to ferment, before being placed in large pressure cookers, and the fat is extracted through the distillation process and preserved in glass vials.

The agarwood tree is considered one of the perennial trees. It ranges between 60 to 100 years old.

Methods of use

There are many ways to use the oud, and perhaps the most common one is to place it on charcoal in a smoker until it burns and its fragrant scent spreads.

Guests are smoked after food is served and while drinking coffee. In another method, which is usually restricted to the household only, the smoker is placed under the feet to fumigate the clothes.

While men's incense is limited to burning ouds, women resort to "dukhun". Dukhoon is made by women from a paste of musk, oud, amber and a group of aromatic materials used after drying, to be a very fragrant welcome to the arriving guests.

Oud quality

The quality of the oud is measured according to the quality of the wood that was pounded or ground to extract it, and its quality can be determined by its weight and color from the inside.

There are types whose prices are very high, and experts have many measures to know the good from the adulterated; Among them is that the original oud does not tear the eye or harm it when it burns. As for the adulterated one, its price is cheap, and it is directly known for its bad smell, and it is very harmful to health due to the escalation of chemicals from it when burning.

The blue agarwood is considered one of the best and most expensive types of agarwood, and it is characterized by not distilling oil, followed by sandalwood, which is extracted from sandal trees spread in India and Southeast Asia, where oil is extracted from its bark, to make oud incense from it.

The Cambodian oud is also one of the distinctive species, and it is called “super”, and it is less black than the blue oud wood, and its color tends to be more brown than black.

The Cambodian Oud is one of the rare and difficult to obtain items. Because of the procedures for bringing him from India or the poor security situation in Cambodia.

There is also a oud of Clementan, and its source is the forests of the islands of Indonesia, and it is named after the eastern province of Clementan on the island of Tarakan, which is the shared island with Malaysia.

Clementine promises a very strong and sweet smell, and it spreads and stays in place and on clothes.

The Vietnamese oud is considered one of the best types of oud that has swept the Arab markets and has a special love among oud and incense lovers, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is mainly due to its inherent quality, which made it a competitor to other types of oud spread in the markets.

Another type of oud is known as the luxurious industrial oud, and this type is widely used among the public, as it is characterized by the scent of oud, and its moderate price, so that it becomes accessible to most people, and is a good choice for guests.

Due to its quality and difficulty in obtaining it, oud has become one of the most expensive types of perfumes in the world, and the price of oud varies according to the type of wood from which it is extracted.

According to previous economic reports, the Gulf countries' spending on traditional perfume products, which include, in addition to oud, both musk and amber, exceeds $3 billion annually.

Oud sales increase on public and private occasions, and holidays are an occasion in which Gulf people are keen to fumigate the finest types of oud, especially on Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.
